I'm not sure about MAC, but in Windows, right-click the iTunes icon (for windows 7, find iTunes in your start list or desktop to right-click it). Clock "properties" then "compatibility". Click on the check mark next to "Run this program with compatibility mode for:" and you should be good!
you could be on compatibility mode *knowing that you must be on computer* its quite simple, you could turn it off by going into the options menu, if its not on compatibility mode you might need to change the resolution from the video section of the options menu.

Disconnect your iPhone and turn it off by holding the "Sleep/Wake" button for about five seconds and then slide the red slider. If your iPhone is already off, there's no need to turn it on and then off again. Once it's off, press and hold the "Home" button and plug your iPhone into a Mac or PC with iTunes installed. Keep holding the "Home" button until you see a dock cable pointing to the iTunes icon. iPhones running older software will display a yellow triangle and text which says "Please Connect to iTunes". Once you see this image, you can release the Home button. This puts your iPhone in "Restore" mode. I don't think there is a "safe" mode for iPhone.
