get a new sensor?
The 1993 has an extra coolant temp sensor on the rear of the head.
A 1996 Jeep does not have a mass airflow sensor.
Not sure if this helps, but the book I have on my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee says that their are 2 of these sensors, I have not had the time to look for the second one. I have the same problem.
On a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 4.0-liter engine, the coolant temperature sensor is typically located on the engine block, near the thermostat housing. It is usually found on the driver's side of the engine, close to the cylinder head. You may need to remove any engine covers or components obstructing access to the sensor for visibility and removal.
What type of coolant sensor? The below answer is for the coolant LEVEL sensor. The coolant TEMPERATURE sensor on my vehicle is located just next to the thermostat housing. On the front top center area of the engine just behind the radiator. Follow the coolant hoses if you have trouble. On my 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee the sensor is located on the top of the plastic coolant reservoir tank. Look for a small (2-wire?) electrical connector.
Low coolant or bad sensor
jeep didnt make a wrangler in 1996. you may have a late model 1995, or if it has round headlights you have a 1997 tj. They used green coolant in the 1990's
It is the two wire sensor next to the thermostat housing.
On the coolant overflow bottle that in on the passenger side of the engine.
sensor is in the plastic reserve on the float.
The 1996 will not have a hole in the rear of the head for the gauges coolant temp sender.
The crank sensor is mounted on the top of the transmission bell housing.
