How do you use Spybot search and destroy?

Run a scan. Customize it or run a full scan. Then follow the instructions If its not already installed, Download and install it from here: http://safer-networking.net/en/download/index.html

Next, run the installation file as normal.

Once installed, You should see a guide come up to help you through the first run. I will outline some of the things it does.

First, IT will give you the option to change what icons you created for Spybot s&d.

Next, it will give you the option of using a proxy, (see: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_good_proxy_websites for an explanation of a proxy), You don't have to use one, but you can if you want.

Then, You will see a page for updates. You should always stay up to date on Spyware definitions, or files for spybot that let it discern spyware from ordinary files. Make sure you check for them on a monthly basis for maximum security.

Finally, the last page will ask you if you would like to review the help file to learn more. Up to you, And this can always be found again under the help menu at the top.

Now, To familiarize yourself with it. At the left hand side, you should see a bar with tool on it. clicking on each icon will take you to the page. Click on search and destroy to run a scan and remove any problems. Once you have, The scan might or might not start itself. If it doesn't, click Check for problems at the upper left close to search and destroy. This will take a while, depending on how big your Hard drive is and how fast your computer it is. When the scan is finished, its time to deal with what it found. Possibly harmful threats are marked with red letters like this. Lets deal with these first. Click on each one, and on the right, another bar should pop out explaining each program( if it can). You might read this, and research the web for info on the name of the program. All threats are selected by default, so unless you find something that you want to keep or is a false alarm, click on the 'Fix selected problems' next to check for problems. If asked to make a system restore backup, Up to you again. This can be used in the future to restore anything you removed in case something is needed. Now, Lets say you want to restore a threat that was just a false alarm. Click on recovery on the left main bar and select the program. Select/click on the recover button. Do what it says from there.
