Garageband is great for recording songs with live instruments.
It is awful at notating music though. Its does have a pretty good midi interface but the notating is pretty limited.
If you are looking to write scores and music Sibelius is much better. I have only used a demo of Sibelius, but still, it lets you do just about anything with the notation. It also allows you to play back what you've written as well.
To move a Sibelius score to GarageBand on a Mac, first export your Sibelius score as a MIDI file by selecting "File" > "Export" > "MIDI File." Save the MIDI file to your desired location. Then, open GarageBand and create a new project, choosing the appropriate track type. Finally, drag and drop the exported MIDI file into GarageBand, and it will create tracks based on your Sibelius score.
