It's a laptop CPU. Therefore not like 5Ghz like desktop ones. (If) you can, you can get it to go at 3Ghz maybe (and ~3,3 with TurboBOOST) or more ;-)
The Intel chip is faster and is easier to overclock than the athlon.
2.3 ghz, higher the ghz, the faster it is. but don't overclock it too high or else your computer will overheat

Of course, I7 is better. First of all, it's cheaper. Second, it does not have problems with heat. Third, if you overclock it, it outperforms (thanks to Hyper Threading) QX9650 even if it was overclocked too.

Intel core i7 Extreme Edtion 980X. Very fast with 6 physical cores. Got mine running at a stable overclock of 4.7GHz on water cooling of course. This though will soon be outdated by their new chipset soon to be released next year
