How much RAM, depends on operating system (minimum requirements) and also the applications you will be running and number of applications you plan to run in parallel. In general more RAM you have better it will be for performance of the machine.

It depends on what you want to use it for. If you want to use it for light internet browsing etc, 1-2GB of RAM will be suitable, whereas if you want to game and run heavy applications, I recommend 4 - 6GB of RAM. Probably aim for around 4GB to give you a wide berth.
