While my first reaction is "don't" because of some bad HP experiences I've had, this seems like a good HP Compaq, the 15" Presario CQ60-220US, for $500 after rebate. My personal recommendation is to get a MacBook ($1000) because it just has much better hardware and software. Plus, if you buy one now, you can get a $10 upgrade to Snow Leopard (which looks like it will be a very good OS, and much, much less expensive than an upgrade to Windows 7).All big box electronic stores carry the popular HP line of laptops as do many smaller locations. Online retailers can also be expected to stock them.
