When you insert a new column in a spreadsheet, the existing columns are shifted to the right. A new column or row will always go where the active cell is, or in the place of the row(s)/Column(s) selected. So if you want to put a column between column E and column F, the new column will be where column F now is, so you select column F, or put the active cell in it. It is better to have it selected.
