I have the 2nd generation 6" Kindle, so results may vary if your version is different.
The Kindle browser on the 2nd gen Kindle isn't exactly the fastest and the width of the screen doesn't help much, either. I can easily read my gmail on it, but haven't managed to access any other webmail services.
So yeah, email is free, except you can't (easily) use it.
