Unfortunately, the first generation iPad is not compatible with iOS 6. Apple stopped supporting the iPad 1 with updates after iOS 5.1.1, which was the version just before the iOS 6 update. Interestingly, the iPad 2 is still supported to this day.

You have to update your iPad 2 to iOS 5 if you bought it prior to the launch of iOS 5.
