Ink-jet printers are page printers. They are only limited by the speed at which the print head can move from side to side, and can print almost any character.

Older printers such as the Daisy Wheel or Golf Ball - rely on a fixed character set, and can only print the characters available on their respective print-heads.

What Snakester1962 states is not completely accurate. Older printers were limited by the character sets on the daisywheel or character globe but that is not what defines what is or is not a page printer.

To correct, a page printer is a printer that prints an entire page at a time rather than a character at a time. Because of this, inkjet printers are by definition still character printers: their printheads must form each character as the head moves back and forth across the page. Laser printers, on the other hand, are able to form the entire page and print it out from left margin to right, top margin to bottom, all at the same time, thus giving them and other similar page printer technologies the speed advantage over character printers.

The specific technologies that are currently defined as page printers are laser, LED, melted wax (such as the Xerox Phaser line), and dye-sublimation.
