It depends on the exact sound card the computer uses. However, in general it's better to set the PC volume to a moderate level (perhaps slightly louder than you'd need), then use a volume control on the speakers to slightly attenuate the sound.

Why you may ask? Distortion, pure and simple. At maximum volume, the PC sound card is much more likely to mess up the sound (most will start doing nasty thinks like "clipping" - basically it sounds awful - and can even heat up the sound card making for more cooling work within the PC). Then that same distorted sound will be lowered to an acceptable level - but it will still be distorted.

So, turning down the PC volume will give you better sound, lower heat and power, and it's a better overall solution.

Hope this helps!
