Motherboard in a personal computer is the main PCB (printed circuit board) on which the process and major peripheral chips reside either directly assembled or mounted through sockets. It also has connector for external interfaces and sockets for adding memory, harddisk and optical drives. Boot memory and BIOS also resides on the motherboard.
