PDA's stand for Personal Digital Assistant.
They are (or were) used as Palmtop computers, that lets a person connect to the internet, manage certain documents, make calls. These were used earlier when cell phones were rather basic and could not be able to do the above mentioned tasks and were also compared to very small computers. Modern cellphones can now do similar tasks and smartphones can be easily compared to them.

If you asked what a file on a PDA is, my answer is everything. anything you see on a desktop computer can also be a file on a PDA. If you asked what a .pda file (having an extension of PDA), sorry, no idea. :)
Palm Computing is known for its Personal Digital Assistants (PDA) devices. The device itself is essentially a handheld device which manages the user's information. Palm's first PDA device, the Palm 1000, was first released back in 1996.
PDA's can be connected to a computer. Files can be transferred from the PDA to the computer and from the computer to the PDA. Data such as phone numbers, addresses and appointments can be synchronized between PDA's and computers so the information can be the updated.
