PDA's stand for Personal Digital Assistant. They are (or were) used as Palmtop computers, that lets a person connect to the internet, manage certain documents, make calls. These were used earlier when cell phones were rather basic and could not be able to do the above mentioned tasks and were also compared to very small computers. Modern cellphones can now do similar tasks and smartphones can be easily compared to them.
