The Watchtower magazine of Jehovah's Witnesses has always remained politically neutral. For this reason Jehovah's Witnesses were persecuted under the Nazi regime. The purpose of the JW's for becoming an NGO of the UN was to gain access to the UN library. Once it became public knowledge in the Guardian newspaper, we quickly canceled our membership so as not to be a cause for stumbling. The Watchtower and Bible Tract Society basically had a library card - access to the UN library - for research purposes. After the UK Guardian newspaper published an article that brought to public light this association with the UN as an NGO.The Watchtower then cancelled their access to the UN records in 2001. They never had any interest in being UN members themselves, they just wanted access to the information in their records. The cost became too high and they pulled out - maintaining their neutrality.
