Explain: The base storage area for hard drives is a sector; each sector stores up to 512bytes of data. If an operating system stores less than 512bytes the rest of the sector goes to waste. The system needs a way to remember which sector holds which files so that it can retrieve it later, this is done using a file allocation table (FAT). It is nothing more than a card catalog of where data is stored. The FAT is two colums, in the left column is the number that has been given to each sector. In the right column contains info on the status of sectors, ie. bad sector. So FAT is an acronymn but it is not a "partitioning tool". There is FAT16 and FAT32. The "16" and the "32" just means the size of the sectors with the FAT16 breaking your drive into smaller sectors which will cause your data to be spread out more because the sectors will fill up faster. Defintely use FAT32, because it will create sectors a lot bigger than FAT16 so you will be less likely to have fragments on your hard drive over a period of time.
Why_FAT32_is_better_FAT_format"
Windows doesn't provide any tools for converting an NTFS volume to FAT or FAT32. You will have to copy the files on the volume to another location and then format the drive. Note that FAT32 is a much more limited file system than NTFS, and there is probably no advantage to doing so on a server.
to access your flash drive you should be able to open my computer and then listed with the drives should be your flash drive you can just right click and then go to open. However, if this does not work do the following to convert to FAT or NTFS: To convert a volume to NTFS or FAT from the command prompt Open the Command Prompt window. In the command prompt window, type convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. Notes To open a command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.
copy it to your computer hard-drive re-format and just copy the files back over!
if the drive formatted? check drive properties (right click on new drive), and see if it has a file system on it. FAT/FAT32/NTFS if not right click drive again and click format quick is ok if it is a new drive, if not just click start should have a letter after format and a restart.
FAT or FAT32.
Windows 2000 and XP computers utility for formatting only supports 32GB formatting for fat32. However, FAT32 allows up to 2TB of space to be formatted from ntfs. So most likely your using XP. Search Google for "Disk Format Utilities" and you can find ones that will format your drive from ntfs to fat32 without losing space.
FAT (file allocation table ) or FAT32 for external
Try formatting at 'FAT' or 'FAT32' with all options set to 'Default'.
Seven uses NTFS, FAT, and FAT32 that I know of. If you are formatting a hard drive, use NTFS. If you are formatting a memory card or usb drive use FAT32.
FAT - FAT32 - File Allocation Table
Fat 32 isn't an error. It is just the format of the drive. You should just be able to open it as normal from the computer menu. It may not open because it may have corrupted files on it.
