Today people have coined anything that harms your computer as a virus. However there are many different types of malware (malicious code) that affect your computer today. The six that affect your system directly are viruses, spyware, adware, rootkits, trojans and worms. They have different charisteristics.

Viruses- Code that adds changes or deletes files. Causing system crashes, startup failures and error.

Spyware- Program that spys on the user and reports keys logged and websites visited to a rogue source using your internet connection.

Adware- A program that usually works in conjunction with spyware but executes and displays many pop ups. Most of which led to fake websites trying to steal your personal information.

Rootkits- A program that works in secrecy and by design is very difficult to detect. Most rootkits hijack your web browser and redirect you when you try to visit certain websites.

Trojans- Program that serves as a portat as a way in for a person to download other malware. In other words downloading a Trojan horse can expose you to all 6 types of malware.

Worms- Program that affects your computer and has the ability to affect other devices and computers connect to your network.
