What are the differences between RAM ROM and Hard-drives?

RAM: Random Access Memory is a type of data storage on a computer which holds information utilized by programs that are running while the computer is on. For example, if you open up a word processor, what you see on your screen while you're typing or backspacing is being "held" by RAM. When you actually savesomething then this is where the Hard Drive (HDD) comes in, and the information is "written" onto the hard drive for use later. When you're typing someting in a word processor and you don't save it, if you turn off the computer you lose the information right? That's because RAM "forgets" what it was doing as soon as the power is turned off. When you click "save" on a document, you can turn the computer off and turn it on later and the information will be there because the hard drive permanently stores the document you saved and it stays there whether the computer has power or not.

Like the hard drive, ROM can store information "written" on it, but unlike the hard drive that memory is usually difficult to modify. This is the "read only" part in read only memory. A CD (compact disk) is a good example of ROM. Back in older times, CDs were often actually called CD ROMs. If you think of a CD you burn with your computer, once you burn it, if you decide you didn't like what you burned you're out of luck- you can't change it. You have to throw the CD away and get a new one. With a hard drive, though, if you save something and you don't like it you can always rewrite it to the drive later.
