Go to My Computer > Device Manager > Mice and Keyboard > Select your mouse > Right click and select update device drivers.
Uninstall and then reinstall the mouse driver. If after that you still have a problem, replace your mouse.
You may have a problem with your mouse driver. I have heard that uninstalling your mouse driver, shutting down your computer and restarting, and re-installing your mouse may fix the problem. This is much easier (automatic) with Windows XP and Vista but less so with Win2k (have your install disk handy). This should not have anything to do with the performance of your computer.
the mechanical part of a mouse can be seen as the driver of direction in a mouse.
Device Driver
That's pretty unlikely to happen; it's likely your mouse is broken. If your mouse driver were corrupted, you probably have other serious issues and would need to reinstall windows...
Both.
If it only happens when you plug the mouse in (and not with other peripherals) it sounds like a hardware problem with the mouse USB cord. Try another mouse - if the problem cures itself - the mouse is faulty - if not, then the problem is in the computer itself.
There are a few different things that may be causing the problem. 1) You have a defective mouse - Replace it. 2) The surface you're using is not reflecting the laser properly (glass?) - Use a mousepad 3)The driver files are not working properly - Start-> Control Panel-> Mouse-> Hardware-> Select mouse-> Properties. Then check all of the driver settings. You can also update the driver from here or roll it back to a previous version (if you recently updated and then began to have issues).
Install driver, plug in the USB, put batteries on your mouse and it should be working in a few seconds. Where is the driver? must be in the usb plugin that came with the mouyse. BUT...the driver may be bad. Every once ion a while thew mouse does not want to move. It locks up and I wanted where I could get some new software? The driver I have shows that it is a HID-Compliant Mouse with a driver supplied by Microsoft dated 1971.
This is most likely a problem with your mouse, or mouse settings, and not a problem with Microsoft Office.

any mouse that is opticall can be used without a mouse pad with no problem. However, the ball mouses need the mouse pad for traction
