What does it mean by cc?

When you email someone and you find an address after cc: that means they were sent a copy of the email. cc is an abbreviation for carbon copy - a method of making duplicates of a written piece of paper by placing a sheet of transferable ink "carbon" between the original and the copy which is underneath. This was in wide use before the invention of photocopying machines.

It stands for Carbon Copy, and means that a copy has been sent to another person or persons, whose names are listed.

The expression comes from the days when letters were typed on a typewriter. To make a copy of a letter the typist placed a sheet of carbon paper between the top sheet and the second sheet of paper. Then when the keys hit the inked ribbon and put a mark on the paper, the impression carried through to the second sheet (and often to as many as four or five sheets.)

It was customary to put on the original letter a list of those who were being sent a carbon copy. This was headed with the abbreviation c.c.
