A local area network means all the devices connected locally with in a company throught the switch or hub .and sending information locally from one desk to another .
and a dsl digital scriber line is a example of wan its a network to provide the broadband connection throught the moden switch,so its a wide area network.
A Cable/DSL gateway is a network gateway. It is used to establish a connection between DSL and Cable TV to a computer network by physical means, such as through LAN or a wireless network.
The full form of dsl is D-Digital S-Subscriber L-Lan thus the full form of dsl is digital subscriber lan
PAN = Personal Area Network WAN = Wide Area Network LAN = Local Area Network
Try this setup: Cable/Dsl Modem---->Wireless router---->wireless devices, desktop.
Playing multiplayer over the same wifi network/LAN
In order to have a phone line connection that is as fast as a Local Area Network connection, or almost as fast, you'd have to be connected via DSL. Verizon offers a really neat DSL; this is what I use to connect. DSL's connect through the Ethernet port on the back of the PC.
Wireless LAN means: Wireless Local Area Network. WIFI: is a high frequency wireless local network. So yes, they are similar.
When using bridge mode, a person can extend their LAN service to another or through another modem. LAN can be made faster if bridged through a DSL modem.

If you mean, "What is a wireless LAN?" The answer is simple. A wireless LAN is a network that connects multiple computers, gaming consoles, and gaming devices and allows them to connect to the internet, but only if they are capable of using wireless. Wireless LAN is achieved by using a wireless router. LAN stands for Local Area Network.
If by "active" you mean being on a computer to see if it is ON a network? Basically, if you have an IP number in the network settings on the computer then your Ethernet or wireless port is active and open. On a Mac to disable or make a different network setting just use a "Location". Go to System Preferences/Network/Locations, drop down menu to Edit, click ADD(+). Type in a name you want and then it will give you a blank slate to start a new network setting. Go to Configure IPv4 and use the OFF setting and then you won't be on ANY network, Lan or internet. Click APPLY at the bottom to save. Now you can go back to the APPLE Menu/Location and pick the one you had before. I have Locations for Lan DSL, Wireless DSL, Lan, Wireless Lan and OFF. On OS-10.6 don't forget to pick a connection, Ethernet or Airport for the location your setting up. If you mean if your kid/wife/husband is upstairs and you want to know if they are on the internet/Lan network from your computer downstairs then you might be able to "Ping" them, but you have to know their "exact" IP number and be on the same subnet. You may also look inside the Router if you have the MAC Address set up and then just check to see if that computers MAC address is listed.
