Backspace or Del will erase text. Backspace will erase in < direction. Del or Delete will erase in > direction.

You can delete text in an Excel cell by pressing Backspace or highlighting the text and pressing Delete.
Lots of things can do it. The obvious ones are the Delete key and the Backspace key. You can also type any other character or press the Enter key. You could also cut the text. So there are many ways of doing it.
