Lossy format means that data was lost during conversion from original source, for example WAV to MP3 results in loss of audio data that most people can't hear, because they're probably have a terrible monitor chain. MP3 is a lossy format. WAV is lossless. And use Google next time please.

Is TIFF a better file format than JPEG for preserving image quality?

TIFF is generally considered a better file format than JPEG for preserving image quality because it is a lossless format, meaning it does not compress the image data and therefore does not result in any loss of quality. JPEG, on the other hand, is a lossy format that compresses the image data, which can lead to a reduction in image quality.

Why lossy compression is used for JPEG image?

The JPEG format was specifically designed to minimize the size of the file beyond what other formats were able to do at that time (for example BMP RLE or GIF LZW). In order to achieve it, it was decided to accept minor degradation of the image quality - with other words the compression is lossy. For more details about how the JPEG format compares to other image formats, please see the related question.

Is decompression of an image introduce noise?

No, the decompression itself does not introduce any noise or loss of quality. In order to avoid loosing quality again, do not save the image in a format using lossy compression (like jpeg).

What are the differences in image quality between JPEG and PNG formats?

JPEG format is a lossy compression format, which means it sacrifices some image quality to reduce file size. PNG format is a lossless compression format, which retains all image quality but results in larger file sizes. JPEG is better for photographs with many colors, while PNG is better for images with sharp edges and transparency.

What are the different types of compression supported by the TIFF format?

The TIFF format supports two main types of compression: lossless compression, which preserves all image data without quality loss, and lossy compression, which reduces file size by sacrificing some image quality.

Where do JPEG files come from?

The JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) format is a popular lossy compression format for digital photos. They are created either through processing with an image editing or scanner program, or by the camera itself.

What is the best file format, JPEG or PNG, for high-quality printing?

For high-quality printing, PNG is generally considered the best file format due to its lossless compression, which preserves image quality. JPEG, on the other hand, uses lossy compression which can result in a loss of image quality.

Is a PNG file format better than JPEG for image quality and compression?

PNG file format is better than JPEG for image quality because it supports lossless compression, which preserves image details without sacrificing quality. However, PNG files are larger in size compared to JPEG files, which use lossy compression.

Why are images saved in jpeg?

The JPEG/EXIF file format is optimized for storing photographs like images. It uses lossy compression, RGB, 8 bit per channel, no support for transparency or multiple images, 2D images support. The files are small and as long as the compression is not too great the image quality is almost identical to the original. JPEG images are very common, being supported virtually by every imaging device and image processing software. Due to their small size are ideal for storing, transmitting and embedding photos or similar images.

What is good and about saving your image as JPG?

This is the right format for those photo images which must be very small files; for example, for web sites or for email. The JPG file is wonderfully small, often compressed to perhaps only 1/10 of the size of the original data. However, this fantastic compression efficiency comes with a high price. JPG uses lossy compression (lossy meaning "with losses to quality") .Lossy means that some image quality is lost when the JPG data is compressed and saved, and this quality can never be recovered.

Are PNG files lossy or lossless?

Lossless. Compression techniques do not remove detail from the image.

What is a gif format image?

Full form of GIF format of image is Graphics Interchange Format. This format of image can able to save only 256 colors which makes this format poor in the comparison of other image format.
