GeForce GTX 260 or ATI 4870 are some of the better cards available today while not being bank-breaking forerunners, and both are good choices for a gaming PC.
A graphics card with a Ghz speed of 2.3 or higher is the minimum for a good gaming pc. The nvidia GE force 8 series is a good minimum card. If you want to spend a little more you might choose an ATI Radion card.
A video card (aka graphics card) renders components that are being displayed on your screen. even the windows transparency is rendered by a graphics card. many low end computers have graphics integrated into their cpu. this is not good for 3d gaming. So if you are a hardcore gamer get a laptop/pc with a dedicated graphics card.
You did not mention about any graphics card. First of all, you should use a good graphics card for gaming purposes.. 6 gb of ram is good enough to run hi-end games on very high (or ultra) settings, but without a graphics card, intel's inbuilt hd graphics neither run hi-end games on high settings, nor can use upto 6 gb of ram. This config will be good for gaming if you add a pci-e graphics card.

You click your start button and go into control panel then system performance to see your stats. It is much harder for a laptop to be good for gaming as apposed to a pc. You will need to have a good processor graphics card and some RAM.

For serious PC gaming, a graphics card is a necessity. That being said, there are plenty of games which can be played with only a decent CPU. A list of older games such as Half Life and StarCraft should run well on a modern machine without a graphics card.
