MS Outlook is hosted by Microsoft and it stores information in PST or Personal Storage Table files. On The other hand, Lotus Notes is hosted by IBM Lotus Domino and it uses NSF files to store information.

IBM Lotus Domino is the application server. Both can be used as email clients but Lotus Notes can also be used in a broader manner. The UI of both applications is very differemt. For emails, according to user experience, Outlook is considered better and is preferred by majority of people. Whereas, Lotus Notes has many utilities other than managing emails, so opting LN just for emails is not considered as feasible. Also people has to be trained to user LN due to its complicated UI. The way to store data is also different for both the clients.
