Spencer Silver invented the adhesive used in Post-it notes in 1968 while working for 3M. Arthur Fry later developed the idea of using the adhesive for sticky notes in 1974, leading to the official launch of Post-it notes in 1980.

"Sticky notes" in French is spelled "post-it" or "notes autocollantes."
The adhesive used on Post-it Notes was developed by Spencer Silver, a chemist at 3M. He created a unique repositionable adhesive in 1968 that allowed the notes to stick lightly to surfaces but be removed and repositioned without leaving residue. The concept was later popularized when Art Fry, also from 3M, used Silver's adhesive to create Post-it Notes in the late 1970s.

Post-it Notes were first used as a bookmark and for temporary notes. They were invented by Spencer Silver in 1968 while he was trying to create a strong adhesive but instead developed a low-tack, reusable glue. The product gained popularity after Arthur Fry, a colleague, realized they could be used to create notes that would stick without damaging surfaces. Eventually, they became a widely used office supply for reminders and organization.
Post-it Notes were originally created as bookmarks for hymn books. In the late 1960s, Spencer Silver, a scientist at 3M, was attempting to develop a super-strong adhesive but instead created a weak, repositionable adhesive. This led to the idea of using the adhesive on small pieces of paper, resulting in the creation of Post-it Notes, which were initially marketed in the 1980s as a tool for reminders and notes.
