Pentium 4 vs. Dual Core

There are MANY differences between these two generations of Intel CPU's. Most notably, Duo Core CPU's possess two processing cores opposed to the Pentium 4's single processing core. While a Duo Core CPU may be operating at a lower overall operating frequency, it is still much more powerful then a Pentium 4 considering it's improved FSB speed, cache size, multiple cores, efficiency, etc.

There are numerous architectural differences between Pentium 1 and 4 : the first one is based on P5 micro-architecture while the second one is based on NetBurst micro-architecture. The Pentium 4 is significantly newer than the original Pentium (released in 2000 instead of 1993). The Pentium 4 runs much faster too.

The Pentium 4 support many additional features such as PAE, SSE and SSE2. The later models of Pentium 4 support SSE3, NX-bit and x86-64 instructions too. Any Pentium 4 CPU works much faster than Pentium 1.

In fact, except the backward compatibility with the older x86, the Pentium 4 has virtually no similarity with Pentium 1, despite its name.

Pentium 4 is an Intel product. It has only one core but some versions support Hyper-Threading to create two "logical cores" while there is only one physical core.

Quad-core is the property of having four processing cores in one CPU. It has nothing to do with Pentium 4.

I assume by "dual core" you mean "Core duo," which is Intel's successor to the Pentium 4. Even if this isn't the case, the question can be solved with the same answer!

The Pentium 4 by Intel and single-core Opteron by AMD could both be considered the last hurrahs for single-core computing. The Pentium 4 was a "Maximum frequency" performance model-- a processor that would only have one core, but would aim to offset its own physical limitations by having an excessivly high clock frequency. I could go into the history of this chip but that's not for today!

A dual-core (Core 2 Duo is a dual core processor) threads workloads instead of processing them on a single processing core. For simplicity's sake, imagine taking 2 Pentium 4s and cramming them onto the same wafer of silicon. The first dual-core offerings by Intel were basically this, and were hardly efficient.

Sorry for ranting! The main difference between the two is a dual-core has two processing cores on the chip, while a Pentium 4 only has one. Manufacturing process (Dual cores were manufactured with smaller parts), heat output (dual cores tend to put out more), and maximum potential performance (Dual-cores tend to be able to do more calculations per cycle).

Pentium 2 has one core and is much slower around 333mhz or so if I remember... core 2 quad.... has 4 cores and runs at a much higher clock speed thus getting more done.

A dual core processor is a type of processor that has two CPUs operating within one processor core. A quad core processor is one that has 4 CPUs in one processor chip.
