There are MANY differences between these two generations of Intel CPU's. Most notably, Duo Core CPU's possess two processing cores opposed to the Pentium 4's single processing core. While a Duo Core CPU may be operating at a lower overall operating frequency, it is still much more powerful then a Pentium 4 considering it's improved FSB speed, cache size, multiple cores, efficiency, etc.
Yes, you can partition the Acer Extensa Intel Pentium DualCore laptop, but it will affect your hard drive space.
The Pentium D is essentially a rebranded and double-cored version of the Pentium 4. The Core 2 Duo is a much more efficient and powerful processor.
Intel Core
The Intel Pentium line encompasses many processors of many different architectures ranging from the original Pentium Processor of 1994 up to the Core 2 Duo based Pentium simply called the "Pentium". The Intel Pentium used to be Intel's flagship processor. Recently this position has been taken by the Core 2 Duo and Core i7. The Pentium now is reduced to a budget processor that offers lower performance but also lower cost.
There are version of Intel Pentium one through four as well as Intel Pentium Pro, Intel Pentium D, Intel Pentium M, Pentium (2009), and Pentium Duel Core.
The Intel Pentium DualCore 1.43Ghz is the Merom T2310 with 533fsb, 1MB L2 Cache, 65nm, and the unnamed 2.5Ghz could only be the Intel Core2Duo Penryn T9300 with 800fsb, 6MB L2 Cache, 45nm. The Penryn is newer, faster and more efficient.
Pentium 4 uses Hyper-Threading, which is like a dual core, but isn't. A Dual-Core consists of 2(two) logical cores.
The core 2 duo is faster.

The Intel Pentium Dual-Core is much faster.
The basic diffreence is that in a mobile processor, they build it so that it uses as little power as possible, so that your battery lasts as long as possible. There are many ramifications to this, but that's the motivation.
Pentium 4 is an older single core processer. The Intel core 2 is a newer generation with 2 processing cores, much faster at handling multiple tasks at once. If you have a choice pick the core 2.
