What is the main purpose of using LAN and WAN?

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It like an office with all the computers hooked so they can share data and send emails just inside the office or building. A WAN stands for Wide Area Network and it connects two or more LANs...the internet is a good of example of a WAN...the internet consists of a network connected to other networks..hope this helps.

- WAN: far apart, connecting networks, slower speed

- LAN: not further than 300-1000 m apart, connecting computers, higher speed

A LAN (Local Area Network) is a network of computers for an office building, school, home, or other such finite location. A WAN (Wide Area Network) is a network composed of two LANS that are remote from each other. For example, the various offices of the FBI across the country have their internal LANs connected to each other into a WAN. There is also another class of networks that is not often mentioned by others than network engineers and that is the MAN (Metropolitan Area Network). This is somewhat like a mini-WAN. It connects various LANs into a larger network that spans across the city but generally not beyond the city limits. An example of this would be the networking of the police department with the fire department, parks and recreation, city hall, water department, and other such local government agencies (with the presumption that they are at various facilities around the city rather than all gathered in the same building).

However, the Internet is actually not a good example of a WAN because it is actually a special class all to itself since it is a network that connects multiple WANs.
