Regedit (or Regedt32 or other similar programs) are used to view and modify the registry file in a Microsoft Windows computer. Regedit should be used with great fear and caution as it is possible to severely damage your system when accidentally (or intentionally) removing or changing entries in the registry.

The Windows Registry is a file in the form of a database. It is stores and maintains system related as well as application program related information. This is where statistics for Microsoft Freecell and other games are kept. It is where information is stored for networking. It is where your word processor and spreadsheet and other programs keep the list of most recently used (MRU) data files as well as last know positioning and size of open windows.

Too often when programs are removed or changed, the old information in the registry remains. As the registry grows in size, finding entries and using them takes longer. This results in a slower computer. Using Regedit, it is possible to locate the obsolete entries and remove them.

There are also registry cleaning programs which can scan the registry for entries no longer in use and automatically remove them from the registry.
