What were the circumstances that led to the invention of the first electronic computer ENIAC?

The ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator & Computer) is considered to be the first digital computer that was built in the early 1940s in USA. At first it was used to calculate artillary firing tables for US Army Ballistic Research Labroratory.

1. Mauchly saw a demonstration of Atanasoff's ABC, which proved electronics could do digital computation to much higher precision than electronic analog computers that Mauchly was considering. But he was bothered that the speed was limited by mechanical components.
2. Mauchly found Eckert, who assured him the designs could be made "fully electronic" and reliable.
3. WW2 started and the BRL at Aberdeen needed a better and faster way to compute artillery firing table books, to meet the increased demands of the war.
4. Eckert and Mauchly proposed the ENIAC to BRL at an estimated price of $50,000.
5. BRL took the ENIAC proposal to Vanevar Bush (the developer of the Differential Analyzer, an analog computer with many similarities to ENIAC including its programming system). Bush indicated the price of ENIAC when finished would be similar to the Differential Analyzer: $500,000.
6. With no other practical proposals, BRL issued a Cost Plus contract to Eckert and Mauchly to build the machine as fast as possible.
7. ENIAC was finished in late 1945 at a total cost of slightly over $500,000.
