Computers are labor saving devices; everything that they do can be done by human beings, it just involves more work. Instead of email we would use regular mail, delivered by human mail carriers. So the economy would be less efficient, but then, there would also be less unemployment. Exactly what the overall consequences would be for society is difficult to say for sure, but my guess is that the world would have entered into a very serious global depression decades ago, if not for the economic stimulus resulting from the computer industry.
