email was created as a way to quickly efficiently and cost-effectively communicate with people over long distances. It was created in 1972 by Ray Tomlinson an American computer programmer. Tomlinson was working on the TENEX operating system and he created the system by using two programs: SNDMSG and READMAIL. SNDMSG allowed users to compose messages and send them to other users on the same system while READMAIL allowed users to read the messages they received. Tomlinson then developed the "@" symbol as a way to identify which user was sending a message. This allowed messages to be sent and received by multiple users. Since then email has evolved and today it is a key part of communication in both professional and personal settings.
