One can download a good AVI player for windows from the Real Player website. VLC player is also widely recommended as a good AVI player for windows and will play almost any video file. This can be downloaded from a Cnet.

Assuming you mean Windows Media Player (WMP) and not WMA, yes, you can, but you'd need the required codec. Search for the avi codec download and it should come up in Google.
Depends on your converter, make sure you have selected the right options. But the most likely cause is that you don't have a proper AVI player. The one I use is VLC player (windows media player is not very good at playing avi files).
Download it in either a .wmv of .avi format in order to play it back on WWM. Should work :)
Avi is used by Windows Media Player by default, and to open that file just double click it. If it will not open then right click on the file and go to Open With > Windows Media Player.

AVI files may not work in Windows Media Player if the appropriate codec is not installed on your system. .AVI or Audio Video Interleave is a video format designed by Microsoft and should be widely accepted in any version of windows media player, otherwise any free .avi player online will do the trick
