There were several computers in the IBM PC 300GL line, with a variety of specs. Knowing which particular model you have is key to selecting a version of Ubuntu or similar distribution. For instance, all versions of Ubuntu would run poorly (if at all) on the 6272, while suggesting a Debian netinstall on a 6564 would be a little too spartan compared to what the system is capable of handling.
Get the Ubuntu (linux) version. If you install ubuntu it comes with it.
Ubuntu is best, but then I'm biased, as my computers all run Ubuntu!
Linux (ubuntu 10.10 and higher) and mac OS x (newest version) because they're the fastest best looking and simplest.
The operating system Ubuntu is a free platform that is available in several places on the web. The best place to download it from would be the official Ubuntu website, which would also provide tips and answers to any questions you may have.
Most businesses will not have employees familiar with the use of Linux distributions. In this case, a more windows-like version would be recommended, such as Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS or PCLinuxOS. If you are planning to keep your company computers small and cheap then a lightweight distribution would be best. Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Puppy Linux, Bodhi and Damn Small Linux are all easy to run on older hardware.
Linux does not need antiviruses. It doesn't as much as windows, but it is possible for you get a virus on this system. Avast has a version for Ubuntu and its branches of distros. http://www.avast.com/linux-home-edition

That depends on what you define as "best". Ubuntu seems to be the most popular at this point, but that doesn't make it the "best".
I would have to say Dialga or arceus
Every time there's a new version of Java, it would be best to update it. The latest version always has better performance than the last.
