Android is Google's open source OS for mobile phones. Because it's an OS, I'm going to compare Android to other OS', not phone models.

The biggest competitor of Android is Apple's iOS 4 for the iPhone 4. It has almost the same technology and runs on comparable devices.

Then we have Windows Mobile. Windows Mobile has a smaller market share than Android but it runs on roughly 20% of all smartphones.

Next in line we have the OS' of phone manufacturers themselves. These are: Brew, Mimo, Symbian,...

And last there are developpers' own OS' mostly derrived from linux. They also want to make a open source OS.
