The USS Monitor was designed by John Ericsson. It was built in only 101 days by Continental Iron a works in Brooklyn, New York. The USS Monitor was the first ironclad navy ship built in the US.

The first Union ironclad warship for the Union in the US Civil War was the USS Monitor. It was designed by Swedish engineer, John Ericsson. The ship was unique in that it was the first warship to have a revolving turret. This enabled the ship to always be able to aim its cannons on an enemy warship. The USS Monitor was built in 1862 and battled the CSS Virginia at the Battle of Hampton Roads.
The Union Ironclad ship was the Monitor. The Confederate ship was the Virginia.
The Confederate ship was called the Merrimack and the Union ship was called the Monitor.
The USS Monitor was designed the Swedish engineer John Ericsson. The rotating turret which made the Monitor a unique vessel was however the creation of Theodore Timby of Saratoga Springs New York.
