John Fanning was the founding Chairman and CEO of napster. He owned 70% of the company and represented the founders on the board of directors. Shawn Fanning was focused solely on software development. Shawn owned 30% of the company. They were the only two Founders, and the only ones with founders shares. Sean Parker who arrived about 6 months after the project launched considers himself a founder because he was one of the early contributors. Although Parker specifically requested the title when he negotiated his deal, he was specifically told no, he was far too late to be a founder. Tom Carmody who arrived prior to Parker does not call himself a founder but received stock before him. Many others have claimed to be founders, including early users and volunteers. Those claims are false.
