No one really has the right answer for this. Although several thousand people have been experiencing problems with this since vista was released, Microsoft (as usual) pretty much refuses to acknowledge that there's any problem. If you start your computer up in safe mode and open windows defender you can disable it (as it cannot actually be uninstalled safely without some serious technical know-how) via going to tools>options and unchecking the "real time scanning" option (near the top) and the "Use windows defender" option (near the bottom). Hopefully the freezes you were experiencing were indeed caused by Windows Defender and you can start back up in normal mode without any issues.
