Why are all of the letters mixed up on the key board?

This is a throw back from the days of mechanical typewriters. The keys were arranged in this fashion, with the most used letters opposite of each other, so the hammers with the letters on them, didn't crash into each other and jam up. Because most typists had become used to this layout, it was natural to continue with computer keyboards being the same.

The QWERTY keyboard design is based on a layout created for the Christopher Latham Sholes in 1873. The key layout is specifically designed where the most used keys are laid out in a manner where, as a typewriter the hammers (that carried the letters) would not jam with others pressed at the same time. The age old typewriter jammed frequently as the typist hit keys where the keyboard was laid out in alphabetical order (a, b, c, d, etc). The layout carried over when the electric typewriter was then created and later when the first word processors were introduced. Thereafter it became a business decision that changing the layout would cause businesses huge costs as they would have to retrain their typists for a new key configuration.
