Why do you need for networks of computers in education?

Networks are important for schools because they allow students and teachers access to the internet. Of course students would not have as many privileges as a teacher because students don't need to access administrative programs and features as teachers may. Networks allow teachers to collect marks and share them on the network with other teachers, but not only marks but attendance records and other stuff teachers may need.

For a school the best type of network would be a WAN (Wide Area Network).

If it were a collection of schools or campuses I would recommend a MAN (Metropolitan Area Network).

Not finding a specific answer in various articles, I'll give my educated guess to this question.

In the early days of computers, the actual computers were large and expensive (taking up entire rooms). So by networking to them, it allowed the user to not have to travel to the actual computer room. Another advantage: by allowing multiple terminals access to the computer, and having a computer which could 'parcel out' it's computing instructions, allows the computing power to be utilized more.

Output devices such as printers were also large and expensive. If these resources could be shared, then that is more economical.
