i dont think it would be poisonous. depending on how big the rat is, i dont think it could even eat an acorn!
There are a number of species of rat that live in deserts around the world. It would be a big help if you named a particular species.
The islands could be named because there are rats on them, or because they are in the shape of rats. The smaller one is given the term "little" to distinguish the two. In Western Australia, there are islands called Rat and Little Rat Island. The "big" name is not used.
