Using a power switch or forcing a power off video physical means means you're shutting down a system that the OS might not be prepared for. Meaning it may not have done it's clean up, it might leave temp files in place, half written, hard drive heads don't park, devices do not power down correctly.
It can cause all manner of issues. Most modern OS's will be able repair that sort of stuff but not always. It's always a last resort.
