Windows & was named so because it is the 7th version of windows. And I guess it was the lack of creativity from MS that they couldn't come up with a more decent name :)

but they are following version names after window NT , all windows either XP or vista all have version name.

Windows 7 was not "discovered", it was created, or designed - by a company called Microsoft - which is of course the same company that designed previous versions of Windows.
My guess would be the software was created before Windows 7, so it was never given the compatibility to run on the newer system

XP Mode only works on Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, and Windows 7 Enterprise.
