A file saved/exported in Standard format can be viewed on Standard media players, whereas files still in project form cannot.
Click on File, Save Project. Or you can Finish/Publish the movie (exporting it as Standard format) on the computer. Or you can save it on a thumb drive.
That will depend on what you want to do. If you are in Excel saving as a standard Excel file, you don't need to change the file type. It is only if you want to save into a different format, that you would change the File Type. What you change it to, would depend on what you need. You might want to change to a different version of Excel or maybe into a completely different format, such as a text file. If you are working in a different application, saving something to be used in Excel, then again it will depend on what format you actually need.

The ONLY way to change a Windows Movie Maker project file format (MSWMM) to a Standard viewing format is by Publishing/Finishing the project first. Once you have published/finished it, the format is exported in .wmvformat.If you are getting a message telling you that you can't Save the project file for any reason, just PUBLISH/FINISH it.
