You may need to replace the key or the actual lock on the door. A simple option is to spray compressed air into the lock, or break cleaner. This could also be an electrical issue due to the age of the vehicle.
Unlock the doors or trunk with the key.
If the key will not work in the door or the liftgate, you will need to call a locksmith or break a window.
If the key starts the car and you just need to program remote. I just bought a 2000 beetle and had this same problem. Just unlock the rear hatch and lift it up, then unlock driver door with key and push either lock or unlock and it will program the remote to lock, unlock, doors rear hatch and arm alarm
Use the remote door lock to lock the doors, then unlock, then lock. The alarm should be reset. If not get in the vehicle, lock all the doors with them closed, unlock them, relock them walla alarm reset!
Use the key or remote.
1997-2000 You can program up to 4 remotes on this vehicle 1. Turn the ignition ON 2. Within 4 seconds press LOCK or UNLOCK of first remote 3. Within 4 seconds turn the ignition OFF 4. Within 4 seconds turn the ignition ON 5. Repeat steps 2 thru 4 twice 6. Within 4 seconds press LOCK or UNLOCK of first remote 7. The doors will now automatically lock and unlock to let you know that the programming mode has begun 8. Within 15 seconds press LOCK or UNLOCK of the first remote which allows the doors to lock and unlock once and lets you know that the remote is now programmed 9. Press LOCK or UNLOCK of each remaining remote (if you have any) allowing the doors to lock and unlock once as each remote is programmed 10. Turn the ignition OFF 11. Resynchronize it by holding down both the lock & unlock buttons at same time for at least 7 seconds. Doors should lock & unlock once to confirm that resynchronization worked.
If you can not unlock them with a key, you will have to call a locksmith.
If you haven't already done this, try holding the trunk release button down for a few seconds on your remote. Toyota set it up this way so that you don't accidentally open the trunk when you mean to lock the doors. There is also a button inside the glovebox that will disable or enable that function. try pressing it and then use the remote.
