Most PowerBook batteries come with a button that can be depressed which will give an indicator as to battery life via several LEDs nearby (the more LEDs that light, the more charge the battery currently holds; a single blinking light or no light indicates no charge). In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, the System Profiler utility provides information about the battery. Simply launch System Profiler (Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info...) and select the Power item listing in the left column. Scroll down until you see the Battery information.

Alternatively, if you are checking to see if the power adapter is working, you will not be able to tell if the battery is in because it will be providing the power.
Is the battery dead? Check for 12v on the main alternator cable. If no power, check for burned out fusible links between alternator and battery. You may need a wiring diagram to check further.
