If you have HDMI and a Sony HDTV the TV remote will work on the PlayStation 3 Slim. I don't know if the TV remote will work on other HDTVs, but I do know that only the PS3 slim has the HDMI sync. It is also possible to use the PS3 controller as a remote to play the DVD
In main menu, mark "play movie" and press and hold play on your remote

Then, press and hold the "DVD" button on the remote until the red indicator stays on, then release the button. Next, press and hold the "PLAY" button until the red indicator blinks and turns off. Finally, enter the DVD device code for GPX (you can find this in the remote's manual or online), and if successful, the red indicator will turn off.
