The "boot lid open" message on a Volvo S40 typically indicates that the trunk is not securely closed or that the trunk latch is malfunctioning. It could also be caused by a faulty sensor or wiring issue that fails to detect the closed position of the boot lid. Checking the trunk for proper closure and inspecting the latch and related components can help resolve the issue. If the problem persists, consulting a mechanic or Volvo specialist may be necessary.
