There are several ways to turn off write protection on a blank CD, You can either turn off the bios on your system hard-drive for an estimated time. You could also create a format by typing in the command code assigned to the CD on the Start Button.

All CD's are write protected; you cannot write to a CD, you can only read from it. However, a CD-R (recordable disc) allows us to write once only while a CD-RW (re-writable disc) allows us to write many times. It is not possible to write protect a re-writable disc, however it can be formatted in such a way that, while it remains open, we can append new data at a later date; once closed we must format the disk to re-open it but all existing data will be lost.

This is because the data is physically pressed into the surface of the CD at the manufacturing plant to create a series of pits and lands which the laser interprets as the 0's & 1's of the binary data.

Additionally, you also cannot delete data from a CD-R disk. Data can only be written to CD-R, not removed. This is due to the fact that the disk contains a chemical compound that when heated creates areas which are more opaque than that of those not heated. Which represents the 0's & 1's

This process of heting the compound cannot be reversed, and thus data cannot be removed.

A CD-RW however uses a crystalline compound which, when heated forms crystals which are aligned in one specific direction that refracts the laser light slightly, thus giving rise to the 0's & 1's. This process can be reversed by re-aligning the entire surface of the disk so that all the crystall all face the same way, effectively giving you a clean slate to use again.

NOTE - deleted data is not truly deleted until a complete erase process has occured - the data is just flagged as deleted, so the computer ignores it and thus makes it look deleted.

CD-ROM stands for Compact Disk Read Only Memory. By definition, you can only write to the disc one (a process often called "burning" the disc).

Now, this is inconvenient in that the disc can't be changed. The CD-ROM format has a feature called "multi-session" which not every CD burning program supports. Multi-session lets a user add files to and replace files on a disc. This only works, though, if the disc was set up to do this on the first burn. Essentially it adds the extra files to the disc without re-writing the already burned sectors.
